The midwives and staff at Serenity are exceptional at what they do, and I could not be more grateful for their practice and my experience with each of them. This is how birth should be. At Serenity, they truly care about what is best for birthing people and babies—and it shows. They will never do anything to you or for you without your consent, they will support your wishes, and they won’t use scare tactics. They will also teach you how to educate yourself and navigate interventions so you are prepared and confident in the choices you make for your body and baby. They made me feel safe, informed, empowered, and unexpectedly passionate throughout my pregnancy, birth, and now postpartum.

Will my insurance help?
Nevada currently only regulates certified nurse-midwives (CNM). No other type of midwife is regulated. This has both risks and benefits for consumers. Anyone can legally call themselves a midwife and practice in Nevada and they wouldn’t be breaking any state law in doing so. Since not everyone is regulated, it’s important for parents to choose a midwife wisely. Before choosing, interview a prospective midwife and ask for educational background, clinical experience, number of births attended, and references. At Serenity Birth we have Certified Nurse-Midwives to help you.
Medication during labor?
The option of going to the hospital at any point in your labor is always available. Having said this, it is very uncommon in a labor that is progressing normally that women opt to go to the hospital. Having the ability to eat, drink, move, and having the constant support of loves ones makes an incredible difference in your ability to cope with the hard work of labor.
See OB/GYN during pregnancy?
Although it’s not necessary, you may choose to see an OB/GYN during your pregnancy. Clients generally find this dual care redundant as all of the lab work, ultrasounds, and prenatal assessment that you would get with an OB/GYN is available at Serenity Birth Center. Some women like the security of being able to say they have a physician relationship, just in case a hospital transport is necessary during the birth. April does work with a physician group in town if an emergency arises.
Birth certificate & social security number
Your midwife will complete a "Registration Of A Live Birth" form and send it in within 10 days of the birth. One of the questions on the form is for assigning a social security number at birth. We can check "yes" or "no." If you choose "no," you must then register the child for a social security number by the age of sixteen. Approximately 3 weeks after the registration of the live birth you can visit VitalChek and order the official, state-documented birth certificate.

I’ve always wanted to have a natural birth. Never did I think that I would want it at home and in water. My first two children were born in the hospital. My doctor was amazing and knew exactly what I wanted… No Epidural. The first was work. Three days in labor and I was induced. So, I got the Epidural to help me thru the last day. The second was great. I was at home for the first 7 hours of labor and then I went to the hospital for the other 7. All was great at home, blood pressure was normal, and I was focused. Once I got to the hospital it all went downhill. My blood pressure went up and I couldn’t concentrate on my body and what it wanted to do. I got the epidural because the nurse forced it on me, but it didn’t work. Which was good for me because I didn’t want it. I felt every little pain and my body told me that I had to push. After all of this I realized, I can do this at home. I can really do this. Forward two years later, my husband wanted to try for one more. I agreed but under one condition, to have the baby at home with a midwife. He agreed and my research began. April was the first one I found nearest to me. I checked reviews and her background. I knew she was perfect. And boy was I ever right. I had done so much research on at-home births. I don’t know how many times I watched The Business of being born and more Business of being born. I was convinced I wanted her as my midwife but my husband was different. He was more nervous and concerned about the process. Our first consultation was great. She answered All his questions and concerns. She made him feel really comfortable with this option. He was still nervous. April focused on me and the baby on every visit. Amy, her assistant, Doula, and the midwife in training, was amazing as well. They are both very patient and happy to answer every question. They provided all the information I needed to prep for the big day. Week 40 came and went, and no baby. Naomi wasn’t quite ready yet. Bu week 41, April help get the ball rolling on the contractions. I had an appointment and with her help, my contractions started around 1 pm and they were stronger and closer together. I had the tub delivered and set up.
April and Amy came around 4 pm because the contractions were around 4 minutes apart and about a minute long. I love the fact that they let me do whatever I wanted. Walk, sit, drink fluids, eat and/or get in the tub. I was so comfortable being at home and so was my husband. The pain was strong but I was able to breathe thru each and every one. They were so amazing in helping and encouraging me. By 8 pm I was so tired and all I wanted to do was take a quick 5-minute nap. I just remember hearing April say You are doing so great. You are almost there. With every contraction, I pushed and the closer I got to seeing my baby. The pain was in my hips and lower back. I breathed thru each contraction. Before I knew it, April and Amy were getting ready for Naomi. Although I was tired, I got all my strength to push this baby out. In the midst of my concentrating on the contractions and pushing, I hear You are doing amazing. Deep breaths, just like that. I felt her head and then the pop. Her head came out and with another push her shoulders and body. My princess was finally here in my arms. It was the most amazing feeling in the world knowing that I did this. I was able to get up and walk to my bed, hold my baby and eat. I was never able to do that at the hospital. It was great not having nurses come in and out, sticking fingers up you, waking you up to check on you and the baby, and telling you how to care for your baby. These are the moments when you need peace and quiet and to take in the joy and excitement of your baby. The ladies checked me and the baby. They cleaned up and called to have the tub picked up. They answered any questions all my questions and said good night. I saw April two days later for a baby check-up at home. All was good. This was by far the Most Amazing Experience of my life. In the beginning, I was pumped and knew I could do this by my last two weeks I was doubting myself. Hahaha! My husband, who was on the sidelines watching, was so amazed by the whole experience. He said that he wished we would have done this with our first two children. I highly recommend home birth to everyone. Thank you April and Amy for this Amazing experience. You both have such beautiful souls.
Thank you,
Stephanie LuQuin
Hi Serenity Birth team,
I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to switch to your care at 38 weeks. I am not a sentimental or emotional type of woman but wanted to express my sincere gratitude.
Thank you for taking the time to answer all of my & Ryans’ questions - he was scared most of all.
Thank you for letting Ryan & I redeem our birth experience with Penny & your team. Hunter’s birth was… “traumatic” - I hate to use that word but it sucked, I was scared of the same things happening with Penny’s birth.
Basically… I was super blessed to find you in the final weeks of pregnancy, and you gave me the strength & confidence to believe I could have a healthy dream birth on my own terms.
Thank you, Serenity Birth
Dianna
Before I even became pregnant my husband, Nathan, and I wanted a non-medicated, natural, home birth, but I did not want to make ‘a mess’ in my bed. The thought of having to clean everything up after I delivered the baby help us make the decision to choose a midwife who practiced at a hospital. April was perfect . . . I know from the moment we meet in the office that I did not need to look any further.
I had a perfect pregnancy until I went to my 31-week appointment where April said that I could have a home birth with her. I thought “things happen for a reason” so we did not hesitate to stay with April. We began planning for our home birth including renting a birthing tub. I am a planner so we had everything ordered within 2 weeks and set up in the living room 1 week before my due date. I looked forward to each week for my check-up with April. I no longer had to travel all the way to Henderson from my home in North Las Vegas. April really helped with my nutrition since she could see what was in my fridge and I could not lie anymore about what I was eating!!!
By my 39th week, I was ready for Jack to be born; I was really uncomfortable. Nathan was a trooper going on walks with me in January. Nothing was working, I was only dilated 1 cm and had no contractions, not even Braxton Hicks. April finally said that if I wanted to I could visit with the acupuncturist, Sharron Roth, to see if she could get things going naturally. After 2 visits still nothing. I was cooking some lunch on Sunday, Feb 3rd, and my water broke. Continuing with my fear of making a mess in my house, I could only think “thank goodness I was on the tile floor!” I called April very excited that things were finally moving, but still no contractions. April came over to check on me and the baby. We decided to try another visit to Sharron Roth on Monday to see if we could get the contractions going. April came back on Monday to check on me and the baby, but still no contractions. I was starting to worry that I was going to end up in the hospital to be induced. April kept reassuring me that everything would be OK. It felt like groundhogs day . . . Tuesday, April came by to visit, I and the baby were still doing well medically, but I was ready for this to be over and hold Jack in my arms.
I thought the time would never come that I would have some contractions, but it did . . . Tuesday night. I never thought I would be ecstatic to feel contractions (don’t worry the excitement was short-lived). By 7:30 pm the contractions were strong enough that April offered to come by to check on me and the baby. When she got here at about 9:30 pm I thought it would only be a matter of hours before Jack would be here because I felt like I needed to push. After a while on the toilet and then in the tub, I just was not progressing. April checked me and I was only 3 to 4 cm but the baby’s heartbeat was great. That is when I lost it . . . . I started saying things like “take me to the hospital”, “I couldn’t do this without drugs”, and begging my husband. April was so calm – she suggested that I just rest and that she should check me in a bit. How could I rest? The contractions were strong, long, and frequent. I did not want to move from where I was so my husband brought down a comforter and I lay on the living room floor. I noticed Nathan was gone, but April was there helping me through each contraction. After about 1 ¾ hour April checked me again and she said I was 6 cm. Even with the support and encouragement of April I still was begging Nathan to go to the hospital again. April explained that as quickly as I progressed 2 to 3 cm that by the time we got dressed drove to the hospital got checked, and the anesthesiologist came, it would be too late for the drugs. Once she said that I was like “OK if I can’t get the drugs I’ll just stay home.” She had me move back into the tub, but I insisted they lay down towels because I did not want to get the carpet dirty (I know – the things I worry about!!). The tub water was a relief and that is realized our dog Carla was lying on the couch next to the tub waiting patiently for Jack to arrive. I can’t remember how long it was or even when Allison, April’s assistant, arrived.
April checked me at 3:00 am and I was 9 ½ cm, but I had a slight lip left on my cervix. She had me push a few times while she pulled the lip out of the way. Needless to say, not the most comfortable feeling but I wanted to get Jack out. Nathan got into the tub with me holding me up from behind while I pushed. I pushed for about 1 hour and knew that something was not quite right. April had me flip onto all fours in the tub to push and kept coaching me to get Jack out. We had plans for Nathan to catch Jack, but April needed to get Jack out. I remember feeling Jack’s head and feeling so accomplished, it really was almost over. April caught Jack and she was right, Jack had the cord wrapped around his neck. She did not say anything so as not to alarm us, but she did give Jack some oxygen. April was doing what she is trained to do.
It was surreal to hold my baby boy and even more surreal to know that I did it, really did it. No drugs, no hospital, no tearing; I felt like a superwoman. I know April and Alison were still there, but they just did their thing around us. Jack weighed in at 8 lbs 12 oz and 19 ½ inches long, he was perfect. After April checked out me and Jack, see were filling out the paperwork and asked if anyone noticed what time he was born. We were all so excited that Jack finally arrived; no one looked at the clock. Since Nathan was recording the birth, we just rewound the video camera and found that he was born at 4:04 am.
I have to say the best thing about having our baby with April at home was that I took a shower and was in my own bed, with my baby and husband by 7:30 am. While I was getting ready for bed April and Allison cleaned up “the mess” that I was so scared of! I know that I could not have done it without April and Alison; I owe them a debt of gratitude for making my birthing dream come true.
April was not only a great support for me but also for my husband. A few days after Jack’s birth I was going through some papers left on the kitchen island. I found a notebook where Nathan wrote “Is this normal?” and “Is she OK?” April was not only coaching me through Jack’s birth but Nathan as well. I had no idea that this was going on until I found the notebook.
